Dog Clones? Seriously?
I was listening to the radio today (usually an incentive to rant) and they were discussing that couple from Florida who decided to clone their recently deceased mutt.

Firstly: who the hell names a dog 'Lancelot'? Upper-middle class, shit-for-brains Americans with too much time and money on their hands, that's who.

They obviously think that just because the thing was created with similar DNA they are then going to have a complete reproduction of their previous dog - they don't seem to have taken into account the fact that genetics is not the only thing that shapes the personality of an animal. This dog is going to have a different temperament and different life experiences which will inevitably have an effect on how it acts. In fact, one of its first life experiences will have been waking up in a lab and then being shipped all the way from Korea to the States - this is bound to have an at least marginally traumatizing effect on the puppy. So, good start there guys!

I'm sure I'm not alone in finding cloning intrinsically creepy, as well. It basically amounts to mankind playing god and the more of that humanity is able to do, the more we're bound to fuck everything up. Doesn't anyone remember Frankenstein? Or the friggin Nazis?! If they'd wanted to clone a child everyone would've been up in arms, but as its only a dumb animal's DNA they're fucking around with nobody seems terribly bothered. Surely they're breaking some kind of ethical code here?

The other thing that's bugging me about this is that a lot of people who support this couples decision seem to argue that their money is theirs to do with what they will and that other people have no right to dictate what they should do with their dollars...

... what the fuck?! Just because they have loads of money does not make them exempt from the criticism of us lesser mortals, languishing in the filth of 'poverty'. The day rich people are allowed to spend their heaps of cash on whatever the hell they want without incurring comment from the rest of the world is the day socialism dies, the sky falls and the whole world descends into fiery annihilation.

Or whatever.

But still - we're in the middle of a credit crunch people! The whole American economy is in recession, thousands are finding themselves unemployed and unable to support their families and yet we think it's okay for rich people to flaunt their wealth by spending it on ridiculous things like cloning a household pet?! They could just have easily gotten a perfectly healthy and waaaay less creepy puppy from an animal shelter (most of which I'm sure we don't need to be reminded are full to bursting and seriously lacking funds) and donated the money to its upkeep, or better yet spent it on their own human spawn, if they have any. I certainly hope they don't.

I think I'm going to send a copy of Pet Cemetery to them and highlight a few of the more disturbing passages, cause this is so not kosher.

Hope their puppy turns out to be a little shit.

Ahahaa! Nice one love...

I read that the other day n had almost the same thoughts...not so much the creepy stuff but the hundred thousand they blew! WTF?! And as you say...adopt one from a shelter! Or even just buy a new fucking puppy! It's taking the piss this cloning shite...I can see where it can be good to possibly be used in future to create tissues or maybe even organs for people who need them, but c'mon...your dog died...think of the happy memories n buy a new pet...=P
